(not quite) Daily Comic
Story and characters
So, what's all this about, anyway?
On September 14, 2006 I was playing around with a PHP webcomic script I found on the net, and to test it, I made some quick doodles. I discovered that freehand drawing on the Wacom tablet wasn't so easy, so I drew a few more to see how I could improve the process. Then some more just for fun. Some people saw them and commented, so I kept on drawing and the comic turned into a kind of (slightly fictionalised) graphical journal. Although I call the comic essentially plotless, the episodes are not stand-alone, and there are a number of story "arcs" as indicated by the episode titles.
The story so far
In "Prelude" and "Change," the basic premise is established and Mr Artist, Myshka, Lulu, Tam and S-ko are introduced.
"Recollections" gives some additional backstory on the alien Bobbles.
In "Going to America" and "Sisterhood" the characters meet up with Irene and Lea and we further explore their relationships.
"Niagara Arc" introduces demon hunter Kazuma and succubus Malène.
"Onsen" has hot bath scenes, demonic battles, and Malène's mother.
Events in "Spring" push Tam and S-ko to acknowledge their bond.
"Canterbury tales" establishes the frame story for some of the following arcs:
"Alien Invader Tam" looks at the tropes of "magical girlfriend" stories.
"The tale of Myshka" retells Myshka's transformation from her own point of view.
"Not Quite Harem Comedy" delves into the tropes of harem comedy anime.
"Confessions of a Heathen Girl" gives background on Irene and Kira and the Sisterhood.
In "Not Quite Princess Lea," S-ko makes a movie about a dragon.
Mr Artist's bass guitarist sister is introduced in "Not Quite Famous," and a music video is recorded. Tam discovers the Internet.
Tam meets her penpal Karl, bonds with Kazuma, and celebrates a birthday in traditional Bobble way in "Not Quite Serious." Something goes on between Malène and S-ko.
"Not Quite Scary" introduces the vampire Ankhetmaruranetherure, and Malène's mother returns for revenge. Blood and orgies ensue.
In "Not Quite Warriors" Lea wants to learn how to kill zombies.
In "Not Quite Interview with a Vampire" we meet Shirley.
"Not Quite Paradise" is another beach episode.
Main characters
Mr ArtistThe (not quite) Daily Comic is a metafictional narrative, as the artist drawing the comic is also one of the main characters. But while Mr Artist has a certain amount of influence over the reality of the comic universe, the other characters are not his puppets. (first appearance) The Bobbles, Cos and MatThe Bobbles are an alien species of spheroid creatures from a far-away galaxy, whose civilization was all but destroyed when their planet was attacked by a space-faring culture of genocidal religious fanatics. Though inferior in technology and resources, the Bobbles managed to survive the conflict. Their story was related in one of Mr Artist's non-extant juvenile comics. He brought two of the Bobbles into the (not quite) Daily Comic, primarily because they were easy to draw. (first appearance)

S-koFormerly known as Cos, the Bobble with the blue sneakers. Cos changed his name to S (and was nicknamed S-ko) after the Henshin Incident. Compared to Tam, S-ko has more elegant tastes. (first appearance as Cos) (first appearance as S-ko) Seemingly cold and aloof, sometimes even cruel, S-ko experiences intense emotions that she often can't handle very well. She is afraid others will be scared away by her intensity, so she acts cynical to hide the depth of her feelings. She is very protective of Tam, which she tries to hide by frequent teasing. She has occasional bouts of insanity due to past combat stress. |
|
TamFormerly known as Mat, a Bobble wearing red sneakers. Mat changed his name to Tam (nicknamed Tam-tan) after using a Henshin Rod to transform into a pretty girl, in response to a perceived desire from the comic's audience. (first appearance as Mat) (first appearance as Tam) Tam is sociable, friendly, trusting, and a little naieve. She is generally well-meaning, but also somewhat tactless, selfish and whiny, often placing her own emotions above others' wishes. Tam has excellent spatial intelligence, which makes her a good space combat tactician. She suffers recurring nightmares about the war she fought in. |

MyshkaMyshka is Mr Artist's white cat. After the Henshin Incident, Myshka acquired an anthropomorphic appearance, but otherwise she very much remains a cat, and proud of it. It is assumed that she could talk but finds human speech clumsy and mostly devoid of interest compared to feline expression. Her name is a Russian diminutive for "Mouse" (мышка). (first appearance) |
|
LuluLulu is Mr Artist's tortoise, and despite appearances, she is the oldest of the group. Lulu also got embroiled in the Henshin Incident, which seems to have affected her more than any other character. Soon she is learning to speak, but her reptilian personality makes her somewhat of a challenge to relate to. She tends to be philosophical. (first appearance) |
|
IreneHigh Priestess of the Sisterhood of the True Fork, and internet friend of Mr Artist. A single mother, she raises her daughter by herself. She has a job as a video game tester but really wants to be a writer someday. (first appearance) |
|
LeaIrene's energetic five year old daughter. She has a vivid imagination. Lea likes Miyazaki movies, trains, Silent Hill, and asking questions. (first appearance) |
|
Tachibana Kazuma -橘籍真- also known as Rose)Of Japanese descent, heir to an ancient demon-hunting tradition, Kazuma has a strong sense of justice and duty. Due to her upbringing, Kazuma is a bit of a tomboy. (first appearance) |
|
Malène (also known as Nekoko)A somewhat clumsy succubus demon. Hereditary prey of the Tachibana demon hunters. Not actively evil, but almost completely self-centered. (first appearance) |
|
KiraA mutual friend of Irene and Mr Artist, who died some time before the events in the comic. (first appearance) |
|
Karl M. GoldbergTam's penpal. A former revolutionary leader in his homeland. (first appearance) |
|
"Some call me Amaranthe."

|
MorwennaaMalène's mother. (first appearance - as herself - full-size) |
