Parts of the Roman wall can still be identified, and Roman masonry survives within the later medieval fortifications. In particular, sections of the castle’s western curtain wall incorporate remains of the Roman city wall, creating a remarkable physical link between Roman Britain and medieval England.

Following the withdrawal of Roman authority in the early 5th century, Rochester declined, although it did not disappear. By the 7th century it had gained renewed importance as a center of Christianity and became the seat of a bishop. The old Roman walls continued to provide a defensible framework for the settlement, and Rochester once again became an important town.

The Viking period brought new dangers. Rochester was attacked by Danish Vikings in the 9th century, and its position on the Medway once again made it strategically important. By the time of the Norman Conquest in 1066, the city was already an ancient and well-defended settlement.

The Normans quickly recognized the importance of Rochester. A timber-and-earth castle was established soon after the Conquest, probably within the south-western part of the old Roman-walled city. In 1088 the castle was involved in a rebellion led by Odo, Bishop of Bayeux, William the Conqueror’s half-brother. After a siege, William II regained control of Rochester.

The castle was then rebuilt in stone under Gundulf, Bishop of Rochester, in the late 11th century. Gundulf was one of the great builders of Norman England, and his work at Rochester included the early stone curtain wall. Some of this remarkably early masonry survives today.

The most spectacular part of the castle, however, came a little later. In 1127, King Henry I entrusted Rochester Castle to William de Corbeil, Archbishop of Canterbury, who began construction of the enormous stone keep. Rising about 38 metres (125 feet), it is one of the tallest surviving medieval keeps in Europe. Built largely of Kentish ragstone, with carefully dressed Caen stone around its corners and windows, it was both a formidable fortress and an imposing statement of power.

Rochester Castle’s most dramatic moment came in 1215, during the reign of King John. Rebel barons had seized the castle, and John laid siege to it for several weeks. His forces captured the outer defenses and then attacked the great keep. Miners undermined one of its corners, using the fat of forty pigs to set fire to the wooden supports beneath the masonry. The corner collapsed, but the defenders continued to resist from inside the keep until starvation finally forced their surrender.

The damage from the siege can still be seen today. The south-eastern corner of the keep was rebuilt with a round tower in the 1220s, replacing the original square turret that had been destroyed. The castle was besieged again in 1264 during the rebellion of Simon de Montfort, suffering further damage from which it never fully recovered.

The city’s wider defenses also continued to evolve. The ancient Roman walls were repaired and incorporated into later medieval fortifications, while the castle itself acquired new towers and walls. The result was not a single, uniform system of defense but a succession of layers, built and rebuilt over many centuries.

By the late Middle Ages, the castle had lost much of its military importance.
