Accumulation of History

Canterbury Cathedral derives its character from successive building campaigns, changes in religious authority, acts of destruction and the survival of structures that were never intended to become historical monuments. The result is a building whose significance lies partly in its scale, but also in the extraordinary density of things it contains.

Founded in 597 AD, its history involved Norman reconstruction, Gothic experimentation, the cult of a murdered archbishop, the dissolution of a Benedictine monastery and centuries of repair. The cathedral is now the mother church of the Church of England and the seat of the Archbishop of Canterbury, whose office has a distinctive position within the worldwide Anglican Communion. Its importance is institutional, religious and architectural.

<figure class="wp-block-gallery has-nested-images columns-2 is-cropped wp-block-gallery-1 is-layout-flex class="wp-block-heading">The origins

In 597, Augustine arrived in Kent on a mission sent by Pope Gregory the Great. With the support of King Æthelberht, he established a Christian centre at Canterbury. The first church was relatively modest, and little of its original appearance survives above ground.

After the Norman Conquest, Archbishop Lanfranc undertook a major rebuilding in the 1070s and established a Benedictine monastic community. The Norman approach favoured substantial masonry, rounded arches and heavy supporting piers. These forms conveyed permanence, although they also reflected the structural techniques available to builders at the time.

A fire in 1174 damaged much of the eastern end of the cathedral. The subsequent reconstruction, initially directed by the French master mason William of Sens, introduced Gothic forms that allowed greater complexity in the vaulting and a more ambitious use of light. The work continued under other hands after William was injured in a fall.

This sequence explains much of Canterbury’s architectural character. The building contains several periods of design because each generation inherited an existing structure and adapted it to new requirements. Some changes followed catastrophe; others reflected shifts in taste, technology or institutional ambition. A medieval cathedral was a continuing enterprise, maintained by a community whose priorities could change considerably over time.

Norman solidity and Gothic ambition

The cathedral’s architectural development is particularly apparent in the contrast between its older masonry and the later work above it.

The Norman elements, especially in the Western Crypt, have a compact, almost geological quality. Rounded arches rest on substantial supports, and the stonework conveys the impression of a building designed to endure. Gothic architecture introduced a different visual language. Pointed arches, ribbed vaults and more elaborate structural arrangements allowed builders to create taller interiors and larger windows.

The nave, rebuilt between 1377 and 1405, is a fine example of English Perpendicular Gothic. Its vertical lines and large windows direct attention upwards, while the stone vaulting gives the ceiling an intricate, almost mathematical order. The structure is decorative, but its geometry has a practical purpose: the forces generated by the roof must be distributed through the supporting masonry.

Bell Harry Tower, completed around the turn of the sixteenth century, extends this architectural ambition above the crossing. Rising approximately 235 feet, it dominates the cathedral’s exterior. Inside, the fan vaulting displays the technical confidence of late medieval stonework, with ribs spreading in regular curves across the ceiling.

There is a useful comparison here with St Peter’s Basilica in Rome. Both buildings occupy central positions in their respective Christian traditions, and both express institutional authority through architecture. Yet their effects differ in emphasis.

St Peter’s, rebuilt largely during the Renaissance and Baroque periods, makes extensive use of monumentality. Its vast dome, enormous interior, marble surfaces and monumental tombs give physical form to the historical ambitions of the papacy. The scale is difficult to separate from the institution it represents. Even before one considers individual works of art, the building establishes its authority through space, weight and concentrated expenditure.

Canterbury produces a more cumulative effect. Its scale is impressive, but attention continually shifts between architectural periods and individual details. A soaring vault leads the eye towards a stained-glass window; the window draws attention to the masonry around it; the masonry reveals a carved face or an unusual ornamental figure. Moving elsewhere, one encounters the crypt, the cloisters and the remains of buildings associated with the former monastery.

The distinction is not absolute. St Peter’s contains countless details that reward close examination, and Canterbury had wealthy patrons and substantial institutional resources of its own. Nevertheless, the two buildings organise attention differently. Rome tends to establish its authority through monumental scale and concentrated splendour. Canterbury allows its history to accumulate in the visitor’s field of vision, where successive layers of architecture, decoration and historical association compete for attention. The experience develops through repeated discoveries rather than a single dominant impression. One can admire the cathedral from a distance and still have seen very little of what makes it distinctive.

Thomas Becket

On 29 December 1170, four knights murdered Archbishop Thomas Becket in the cathedral following his conflict with Henry II over the relationship between royal authority and ecclesiastical jurisdiction. The killing occurred in the north-west transept, now known as the Martyrdom. Becket was canonised in 1173, and Canterbury became one of the major pilgrimage destinations of medieval Europe. His remains were transferred to a magnificent shrine in Trinity Chapel in 1220, attracting visitors who came to pray and seek the miracles associated with him.

Pilgrimage altered the cathedral’s function and its place in European religious life. The building had long been a centre of worship, but Becket’s cult gave it an international constituency. Visitors arrived from distant places, and their presence brought prestige, donations and considerable economic activity to the city.

The architecture was part of this process. Trinity Chapel became a focal point for devotion, while stained-glass windows presented episodes from Becket’s life and accounts of his miracles. These images communicated religious narratives to visitors regardless of their ability to read. The cathedral’s visual environment therefore served practical and institutional purposes as well as aesthetic ones.

The shrine was destroyed in 1538 on the orders of Henry VIII during the Reformation. A single candle now marks the place where the golden shrine used to be.

<figure class="wp-block-gallery has-nested-images columns-2 is-cropped wp-block-gallery-7 is-layout-flex The upper cathedral records the ambitions of successive generations, while the crypt preserves a more substantial impression of its medieval predecessors.

Becket’s body lay in the Eastern Crypt after his murder and remained there until its transfer to the shrine in 1220. The crypt consequently became an important destination in the early years of his cult.

Medieval churches were often decorated with paint, textiles and other furnishings. Candlelight would also have altered the perception of space, making the crypt a more varied environment than its present grey surfaces suggest. The crypt is therefore both an architectural survival and a reminder of how much historic interiors can lose when their decoration disappears. Stonework endures, but the atmosphere of a medieval church depended on materials that were often more vulnerable.

The Great Cloister

The Great Cloister connected the principal buildings of the Benedictine monastery and formed an important part of the monks’ daily routine. It provided sheltered circulation between the church and other communal spaces, while also serving as a place for reading, walking and reflection.

Much of the present cloister dates from the late fourteenth and early fifteenth centuries. Its elaborate vaulting is decorated with hundreds of carved shields, representing families and benefactors associated with the cathedral. The ceiling rewards close inspection, particularly because its heraldic programme includes an assortment of animals, mythical creatures and ornamental figures.

<figure density. The overall structure is relatively restrained when compared with the great church, yet the ceiling contains enough detail to occupy a considerable amount of time. Its effect depends on the relationship between repeated architectural forms and the individual carvings set within them.

At the centre lies the Garth, a grassy enclosure historically used for burials. The surrounding arcades frame the space and provide a visual pause from the decorated ceiling. The arrangement reflects the practical organisation of the monastery as well as its spiritual ideals.

Canterbury repeatedly redirects the eye. The architecture seems to offer a sequence of discoveries, and the visitor’s attention moves between the overall structure and its smallest components. The distinction is partly one of historical development. Canterbury’s cloister belongs to a medieval monastic complex whose buildings served specific communal functions. Its decoration was added within that practical setting.

The Chapter House

The Chapter House served as the monastery’s principal meeting room. The monks gathered there to hear readings from the Rule of St Benedict and discuss the management of their community.

Rebuilt in the early fourteenth century, Canterbury’s Chapter House is the largest of its kind in England. Its spacious interior, large windows and elaborate timber roof give the room a degree of architectural distinction appropriate to its institutional role.

Monastic life involved more administration than the familiar images of chanting and contemplation might suggest. Food had to be acquired, buildings maintained, guests accommodated and the community’s finances managed. The monks also had to organise their daily services and ensure that the monastery’s various activities could function together.

The Chapter House provides a physical setting for this less visible aspect of medieval religion. Its architecture expresses the importance of communal deliberation, while its practical purpose reminds us that the monastery was a functioning institution with a substantial workload. The grand architecture was only one part of a much larger system.

The medieval water tower

Canterbury’s medieval water tower, dating from around 1160, is among the more unusual survivals in the precincts. It formed part of the monastery’s water-supply system, helping provide water for washing and other domestic requirements.

Historic buildings tend to attract attention through their visible artistry, while the infrastructure that made them usable is often overlooked. Yet a monastery of Canterbury’s size required careful planning to secure a reliable water supply. Water was needed for cooking, cleaning, washing and maintaining the daily routines of a substantial community.

Evidence of the system survives in the twelfth-century Eadwine Psalter, now held at Trinity College, Cambridge. The manuscript contains a plan illustrating the waterworks, preserving a record of medieval engineering within a religious book.

The monastic ruins

The cathedral once stood within a much larger Benedictine complex containing dormitories, kitchens, dining facilities, storage buildings, workshops and an infirmary. Fragments of these structures survive throughout the precincts.

Their present condition reflects a major rupture in the monastery’s history. Following the destruction of Becket’s shrine in 1538, the Benedictine community was dissolved in 1540 as part of Henry VIII’s wider Dissolution of the Monasteries. The cathedral was reorganised under a dean and chapter, and the religious community that had occupied the precincts for centuries came to an end.

Some buildings were adapted for other uses, while others were dismantled or left to decay. Plants had numerous uses in medieval communities. They supplied ingredients for cooking, preparations for treating illness, dyes and materials for other practical tasks. Monastic gardens required knowledge of cultivation, seasonal conditions and the properties attributed to different plants.

Medieval medicine differed substantially from modern medical practice, and many traditional remedies were ineffective. Nevertheless, the garden reflects the practical knowledge that helped sustain a large religious household. The infirmary, kitchen and garden were connected through the everyday management of food and health.

The Water Tower Garden combines cultivated greenery with the remains of the medieval waterworks. In this sense, the cathedral’s architecture and imagery formed part of a larger system of religious communication.

The effect of stained glass depends on its relationship with the building. Gothic architecture created increasingly ambitious openings for light, and coloured glass altered the appearance of the stone surfaces as daylight changed. The present building is partly a record of those decisions.

Reading Canterbury as a historical landscape

The most rewarding approach to Canterbury is to treat it as a connected historical landscape. The great church establishes the scale of the institution; the crypt reveals earlier architectural forms; the cloisters and Chapter House show how the monastic community organised its life; the water tower and gardens expose the practical systems that supported it. The ruins preserve evidence of the community’s disappearance.

<figure class="wp-block-gallery has-nested-images columns-2 is-cropped wp-block-gallery-16 is-layout-flex
